Shiseido To Buy Bare Escenutals for $1.7 Billion

bare esceuntuals 008

According to Reuters.com, Shiseido – Japan’s largest cosmetics company – is set to buy Bare Escentuals for $1.7 Billion.  Before all you Bare Escentuals devotees (of which I count myself one) start to hyperventilate, Reuters.com also reports that while Bare Escentuals will be owned by Shiseido, it will operate as separate division, and the Bare Escentuals brand will continue to be run by CEO Leslie Blodgett. In the article, Jason Gere, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, mentioned that the acquisition by Shiseido will allow Bare Escentuals greater resources to expand into Europe and Asia.  It will also allow Shiseido to expand into the natural cosmetics market.

On the Bare Escentuals website, Leslie Blodgett posted a letter relaying the news, saying that “Bare Escentuals as you know it will remain the same.  We are on a mission to share our products and our philosophy with as many women as possible, and this development will allow us to do so in a much faster way.  Shiseido [...] will help us realize our mission of being a truly global brand so we can bring our products to even more women worldwide.”  Responses by fans on Facebook has been polarized, with comments strongly divided between those that support the decision and those that worry about the quality of the brand moving forward.

Beauty Books On My Holiday Wishlist

holiday-books-composite3

Ever since I was blown away by Kathy Peiss’s Hope in a Jar: The Making of America’s Beauty Culture, I’ve been dying to delve further into the history of beauty and makeup. Here’s the wish-list I will be submitting to the relatives this year!

1. Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone From Beginner to Pro, by Bobbi Brown, Debra Bergsma Otte and Sally Waddyka

Not necessary a book about the history of beauty, but it’s gotten such good reviews, I can’t pass it up! Amazon.com product description: “This is the book that Bobbi Brown’s fans have been waiting for: her 25-plus years of makeup styling experience distilled into one complete, gorgeous book. Bobbi looks at everything from skincare basics to every aspect of facial makeup–from how to find the right color and type of foundation for any skin tone to how to apply every detail of eye makeup (Brows, Eye Liner, Eye Shadow, and Eye Lashes) no matter your eye color and shape. Of course there are never-before-seen tips on blush, bronzer, lip liners, lipstick, etc. And Bobbi looks beyond the face with informative chapters on “Hands and Feet” and “Body Skin Care.” Each chapter has thorough step-by-step basic directions for makeup application and easy-to-follow photographs and line drawings, along with Bobbi’s expert, yet assuring, advice. Plus, there’s a groundbreaking section of the book that will be of special interest to women who’ve wanted to know how makeup stylists do what they do: the top beauty secrets only these artists know, essential equipment to keep on hand, how to break into the business, and how to work with photographers and celebrities.
Breathtaking photos of the finished faces-from everyday looks to exotic runway style-along with advice on putting it all together for every woman, make this a book like no other.”

2. The Artifice of Beauty: A History and Practical Guide to Perfume and Cosmetics, by Sally Pointer

Amazon.com product description: “Why did Egyptians wear so much make up? Were the Vikings really unwashed barbarians? How did the fashionable Elizabethan deal with bathing, lice and excessive facial hair? What happened underneath all that hairpowder and scented pomade in the eighteenth century? How did young women find out about the latest beauty products in the past? This fascinating and unique book traces the way in which we have adorned, perfumed and presented ourselves from the earliest prehistoric evidence right through to the dawn of the multi-million dollar cosmetics industry. We discover what the perfumes found in Tutankhamen’s tomb would have smelt like, what made the medieval woman so synonymous with “the lily and the rose,” and where the most fashionable place was for a woman to buy perfume in the eighteenth century. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century the devil reputedly carried a looking glass, and the most expensive cosmetics could kill. A century later, Beau Brummel recommended the scent of freshly aired linen as an appropriate perfume for a gentleman, and Napoleon himself doused himself in quantities of cologne. This richly illustrated book also includes a wide selection of modernised recipes for those wishing to experience some of the cosmetics or perfumes used by our ancestors.”

3. War Paint: Madame Helene Rubinstein and Miss Elizabeth Arden: Their Lives, Their Times, Their Rivalry, by Lindy Woodhead

No product description on Amazon.com, but it is receiving positive customer reviews. One customer wrote, “I’ve waited thirty years for this book and I was not disappointed. I have read separate biographies of Rubenstein, Arden, Lauder, and Revson; this is by far the best. If you have any interest in beauty, glamor, art, social history, fashion, business or just a good story about two extraordinary women who created empires out of nothing, this book is for you.”

4. Max Factor: The Man Who Changed the Faces of the World, by Fred E. Basten

Amazon.com product description: “Not so long ago, nice girls never wore make-up–in fact, the word itself was taboo! Only stage performers and prostitutes painted their faces. But that was before a man named Max Factor revolutionized the concept of beauty. Born in Poland in 1877, Max Factor worked as a beautician and wigmaker to the Russian imperial family, the Romanovs. In 1904, a year after Czar Nicholas II ordered the Jewish pogroms, Max Factor fled with his family to America. He first settled in St. Louis, where he had an exhibit at the World’s Fair, before moving to Los Angeles in 1908. There he opened a shop selling cosmetics and wigs. Located in the theater district, the store catered to stage actors. But the birth of a newfangled entertainment called the “movies” changed everything. As film technology advanced–from silent films to talkies and ultimately to color motion pictures–Max Factor created the make-up to keep up with it. He designed looks for Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Rita Hayworth, and Katharine Hepburn. He gave Clara Bow “Bee-Stung Lips,” and turned Jean Harlow into a platinum blonde. Soon women everywhere wanted to look like their favorite glamorous stars, and Max Factor was more than happy to oblige. He invented false eyelashes, lip gloss, foundation, eye shadow, the eyebrow pencil, and–every girl’s friend–concealer, among other things, and he began selling his innovative cosmetics to the general public. Make-up madness, like movie madness, was here to stay. The right to rouge was seen as a symbol of freedom from social restrictions. The father of modern make-up, Max Factor quite literally changed the faces of the world and created a cosmetics empire that launched the multibillion-dollar beauty industry. This is his extraordinary story.”

Have any of you read these books? What did you think?

What’s the newest way to get great makeup tips?  Become a “fan” of your favorite cosmetics brands on Facebook!!  It’s also a fantastic way to get up-to-the-minute information about product launches, discounts, etc.  A few weeks ago, I discovered that Bobbi Brown Cosmetics had an official “fan” page, and I immediately “became a fan”.  The other day, they had posted this face chart (above) to show how to get the perfect, winter-red lip.  Just what I was starting to think about!  As of now, I’ve joined the Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Giorgio Armani Beauty, Bare Escentuals and Kate Somerville fan pages.

Just a word to the wise – make sure you join an official fan page if you are wanting genuine information about product launches and sales.

Makeup Palettes (And More!) On My Holiday Wishlist

holiday-makeup-composite

Is it just me, or are ALL the 2009 Holiday Palettes ridiculously tempting?  After sifting through all the latest launches, here are the makeup palettes/gifts I’m adding to my own wish list this holiday season:

1.  Laura Mercier “Color Wardrobe” Compact ($98) – The Laura Mercier holiday sets are always a fantastic value, and this one is no exception.  The two-tiered compact holds 6 eye colors, 3 cheek colors, 6 lip stains, 2 lip glazes and a double-ended lip brush.   The top palette contains: African Violet, Stellar, Café Au Lait, Sandstone, Celestial and Coffee Ground Eye Colors; Plum, Rose and Nude Cheek Colors (exclusive); a Double-Ended Eye Color/Corner Eye Color Brush and a full-size mirror. The bottom palette contains: Mocha, Scarlet, Melon, Mulberry, Nude and Rosette Lip Stains (exclusive) along with Brown Glaze and Pink Glaze Lip Glazes (exclusive).  Also included is a double-ended lip brush.

2. Laura Mercier “Master Toolbox” ($65) — If the “Color Wardrobe” doesn’t fit your budget, Nordstrom also offers this exclusive palette.  This two-tiered compact includes 5 eye colors, 3 lip stains, 2 lip glazes PLUS a mini lip-color brush and a double-ended eye color brush. The top palette contains Beige, Sable, Sandstorm, Mica (exclusive) and Gold (exclusive) Eye Colors, along with a mini Black Turquoise Kohl Eye Pencil. The bottom palette contains Shy Pink, Crimson and Raspberry (exclusive) Lip Stains along with Natural (exclusive) and Spice (exclusive) Lip Glazes (exclusive).

3.  LORAC “Double Booked” Full-Face Collection ($55) — LORAC eye shadows are among some of the best I’ve used.  I would rank their pigment intensity right up there with MAC, and their blendability is unparalleled.  The holiday “book” opens up to reveal two “pages.”  One page is compiled of 8 warm, color-coordinated eye shadows; the other, 8 cool shadows.  Also included are two blushes, two lip glosses, one bronzer, one highlighter, one lip liner AND a double-ended eye color brush.

4.  MAC “Magic, Myth and Mirth” Eye Palettes ($36) — So many choices to choose from!

Each palette contains 6 eye shadows.

-“Devil May Dare = Colors include Oh My Darling (pale frosty cream), Dare Ya!  (light frosty peachy pink), Sorcery (blackened burgundy), Gold Tease (frosty midtone gold), Prankster (midtone frosted olive), and Devilishly Dark (rich brown with gold pearl)

-“Smoke and Mirrors” = Colors include Fire In Her Eyes (neutral beige), Wide-Eyed Wonder (gray taupe), Black Magique (black with gold pearl), Spell #9 (muted pink beige), Deception (frosty golden brown), and Smoke and Mirros (dark chocolate brown)

-“Sorceress” = Colors include White Rabbit (frosty soft white), Hold My Gaze (midtone cool green gray), Edge of Dark (charcoal with silver pearl), Magnetized (light frosted lavendar), Hypnotizing (frosted gray mauve), and Altered State (deep frosted blue purple)

5. Felix Rey Cosmetic Case ($88)- If you’re going to be getting new makeup this holiday season, why not also ask for an incredibly cute cosmetic case to keep it all in?  I am quickly becoming obsessed with this cosmetic case from Felix Rey.  He also offers this larger case for $100 and this smaller case for $55.  If these options are a little too girlie-girl, he also offers this great rocker-chic cosmetic case for $90.

6.  Chanel Collection Essentielle de Chanel Multi-Use Palette ($85) Created by the CHANEL Makeup Studio in Paris especially for the United States, this essential all-in-one makeup wardrobe now features three new must-haves: two cream concealers and one cream blush. The exclusive colour collection, named ‘Paris-New York,’ also includes two shades of lipgloss, one cream lip colour, three powder eyeshadows, a sponge-tipped applicator and a soft-bristled lip brush.

7.  Bobbi Brown Chrome Palette ($75) — Early reports say that this palette is much more wearable than it looks in the packaging.  Eyeshadows: White, Polar Ice Shimmer Wash, Storm Cloud Sparkle, Iron, Thunder Metallic, Moonlight Sparkle, Cyber Grey Shimmer Wash, Foil Metallic, Chrome Metallic and Charcoal Haze. Lip colors: Pink Mist Shimmer Lip Gloss, Winter Bronze Glitter Lip Gloss, Berry Glitter Lip Gloss and Chrome Pink Shimmer Lip Gloss.  Mini lip and eye brushes are also included.

8.  MAC Brush Bags ($49.50) — The holidays are always a good time to stock up on MAC brushes via their holiday brush collections.  With each collection costing around $50, you’re getting top-quality MAC brushes for roughly $10/brush, and most of these brushes would cost between $15-$30 normally.

-“Morning, Noon and Knight” eye brushes include brushes #194SE, 204SE, 224SE, 266SE and 275SE

-“Do The Trick” buff and line brushes include brushes #168SE, 187SE, 209SE, 219SE and 252SE

-“Wave of  a Wand” sweep and define brushes include brushes #129SE, 190SE, 212SE, 227SE and 275SE

What about you?  What’s on your holiday makeup list?

Inside Mad Men – AMC Video On The Makeup (+ My Tips on How I Create the Classic 1960s Look)

Video courtesy AMCtv.com.

First off, if you haven’t already been sucked in by AMC’s wunderkind Mad Men (this year’s Emmy winner for best drama), then make a mental note to buy Seasons 1 and 2 and indulge in this delectable imagining of the 1960s.  Secondly, if you are as addicted to the makeup and wardrobe on the show as I am, be sure to check out this AMC video on the makeup of Mad Men, featuring makeup department head Debbie Zoller.  She explains how you can tell a woman’s age by the way they apply their lipstick and recalls the day she had to buy 100 tubes of lipstick for just one scene!

In my personal efforts to recreate the makeup of the Mad Men era, here are the products I have found that work the best:

Foundation:

MAC Face and Body Foundation ($32.00) – not too matte, not too dewy.  The perfect finish!

Maybelline Dream Mousse Matte Foundation ($8.79) — perfect for achieving the slightly matted look of the Sterling Cooper ladies :)

Powder:

MAC Pressed  Blot Powder ($21) — I usually apply just a touch of this on the T-zone for a slighly more intense, matte look.

Blush:

Stila Convertible Color in Lillium or Gerbera ($25) — Either shade is perfect for achieving a soft “flush” to the cheeks.

Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush in #10, #25 or #40 ($6.89) — This blush blends so smoothly and is almost impossible to overapply — perfect for a soft touch of color on the cheeks.

Lipstick:

Revlon Super Lustrous Cream Lipstick in “Fire & Ice” ($7.99) — If authenticity is your main goal, you can’t go wrong with “Fire & Ice” — first launched by Revlon in 1952 and still available today!  You can be guarateed at least one of the Sterling Cooper ladies has this tucked away in her handbag.

Laura Mercier Cream Lipstick in “Mistress” ($22) — Zoller frequently uses this shade on Christina Hendricks (”Joan Holloway”).

MAC “Russian Red” Lipstick ($14) — The perfect red.  Period.

Eyeliner:

MAC Fluidline Eyeliner in “Blacktrack” ($15) – grab an angled eyeliner brush and start practicing your cat eye!

CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner Pen ($7.50)

Eyeshadow:

MAC Eyeshadow in “Shroom” ($14.50) a soft beige that’s a perfect base-shade.

MAC Eyeshadow in “Satin Taupe” ($14.50) — a gentle taupe with silver shimmer.  Looks great when applied lightly to the crease.

My Favorite Cosmetic Bags!

cosmetic-bags

Here in Chicago, one of my favorite indulgences is to create a handbag at 1154 Lill Studio, a custom handbag company established in 1999. When you walk through the doors, the walls are a sea of fabrics (138 if I counted correctly), which you can mix and match to complete one of the 26 handbag designs they have available. One of the friendly sales assistants takes your order — you tell her which fabrics you want to appear on different sections of the handbag — and 3 weeks later you get to pick up a brand-new, one-of-a-kind handbag. If you aren’t near Chicago, you can design your unique bag at their online store, www.1154lill.com. The whole experience is a handbag lover’s dream! And with the addition of a cosmetic bag (the style name is “Christie” – $59) that you can custom design, it’s now a makeup lover’s dream as well!!! The “Christie” is a half-circle shape, with an interior made of black wipe-off nylon with an elastic for 4 brushes and 4 travel-sized bottles. It also contains 2 smaller slip-pockets with one larger slip-pocket across the back of the interior for organization. I “designed” a few examples above. Check out 1154lill and see which fabric combinations you would use to create your “Christie” :)

Brand Spotlight: Caudalie

caudalie-combo

I’ve been on a months-long search for an antioxidant serum.  A lot of beauty editors swear by Skinceuticals CE Ferulic; however, whenever I use it, my skin looks incredibly shiny by mid-day.  My quest took me to Sephora, where a SA brought me over to the Caudalie aisle.  Whereas many antioxidants use Vitamin C to fight free radicals, Caudalie founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas worked with the Bordeuax Univerisity of Pharmacy to harness the antioxidant power of grape seed polyphenols (one of the things that make red wine so good for you!!) as the basis for their skincare line.  An added plus?  Their products are formulated without parabens, sulfates and synthetic dyes.  The Sephora SA I spoke with said that the Pulp Vitaminee Eye and Lip Cream (Contour Cream for Eyes and Lips – $53) is one of their top sellers for eye care. (*Note: Caudalie is repackaging this product.  It is also known as “1st Wrinkle Eye Cream“).

Here’s the lowdown on some brand favorites (descriptions from Sephora.com):

(1) Vinoperfect Radiance Serum ($79) – My new antioxidant!!  This satiny serum for all skin types offers remarkable, scientifically proven anti-dark spot action in just 4 weeks.  It helps correct existing dark spots and helps prevent new occurences.  Enriched with antioxidants and unique antiaging action that helps stimulate collagen and elastin production, your skin is left even, toned, moisturized and beautifully radiant.  Contains Viniferine (a polyphenol that is isolated from the vine stalk and inhibits malanin production) titrated at 1000ppm. Non-comedogenic and oil-free.

(2)  Pulp Vitaminee Eye and Lip Cream / Contour Cream for Eyes & Lips ($53) – A high-performance gel-cream for eyes and lips.  Instantly reduces the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, lightens dark circles, decongests puffiness and protects from free radicals.  Main ingredients include grape seed polyphenols and tetrapeptides.  *Also packaged as “1st Wrinkle Eye Cream.”

(3) Pulp Vitaminee Energizing Cream ($55) – This rich cream for normal to dry skin is remarkably effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles and improving the overall elasticity of the skin without clogging pores.  It restores vitality and imparts a silky, matte finish that lasts throughout the day.  Main ingredients inclue grape seed polyphenols.

(4) Beauty Elixir ($15-$49) – Part toner, part serum mist of essential oils and plant active ingredients.  Smoothes the skin, tightens the pores, and provides an instant burst of radiance as it stimulates microcirculation.  Main ingredients include grape extract and essential oils.

(5) Gentle Cleanser ($26) – A velvety, gentle fluid cleanser for all skin types, including sensitive.  Leaves the skin clean, soft, free of  impurities and makeup, and protected against free radicals.  Skin regains clarity and health and is perfectly prepared to absorb the benefits of skincare applied afterwards.  Main ingredients include grape seed polyphenols and oat milk.

How Well Does It Work? Clarisonic Skincare Brush…

clarisonic-3

I finally did it.  After reading fantastic reviews of the Clarisonic Skincare Brush for over a year -  including being named InStyle’s “Best Face Tool” in its April 2009 “Best of Beauty” list and receiving 365 reviews on Sephora.com with an average of 5/5 stars – I went to Sephora and got this supposed $195 miracle.  Everything I have read says that it is the best investment you can make for your skin since it removes 6x more makeup than manual cleansing, thus allowing all of your other skincare products to be more effective.  My main reservation (besides the pricetag) was my ultra sensitive skin.  I worried that  hundreds of tiny bristles moving at 300 movements per second would leave my face looking like a tomato.  Luckily, the brush I purchased came with the Sensitive Brush Head, so hopefully this will prove soothing to my skin.  I plan on giving my reviews at the 1-day, 14-day and 30-day mark.

Here’s a rundown of the benefits of the Clarisonic brush:

  • 2x more effective than manual cleansing
  • Removes 6x more makeup than manual cleansing
  • Leaves skin feeling and looking smoother
  • Cleanses so well that products absorb better – example: 61% greater absorption of Vitamin C than with manual cleansing
  • Helps reduce oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes
  • Helps reduce the appearance of visible pores
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

DAY 1 REVIEW: Wow.  I only used it for the first time last night, but I am very impressed.  The brush somehow managed to give me a “very clean” feeling without feeling dry and tight.  And no redness!  I had just a tiny pink glow for 10 minutes afterward, but I think that’s most likely due to increased circulation.  I used my trusted Obagi RosaClear Gentle Cleanser, but the brush does come with Clarisonic’s Gentle Hydro Cleanser.  So far, so good!!…

Day 14 REVIEW: As it turns out, the Sensitive Brush Head that came with my Clarisonic brush ended up being a little too harsh after about a week of use, so I ended up buying the Delicate Brush Head, which works perfectly.

Day 30 REVIEW: I am in love with this brush!  Ever since I switched to the Delicate Brush Head, my skin has felt thoroughly cleaned and rejuvenated after every use.  I can definitely tell that my products are working more effectively as well — one positive benefit being the disappearance (finally!) of a pesky sunspot (wear your sunscreen, ladies!).  My advice is that if you can find a way to make the initial $195 purchase (this would be a GREAT present idea for holidays/birthdays), the benefits are tremendous, and you only have to pay $25 every 3 months or so to replace your brush head.

Add A New Depth to Eyelids with Gold

bobbi-brown-shimmer-wash-gold

Go and take a close look at your eyes (irises).   I’ll wait……  When you look closely enough, you notice that all eye colors — blue, brown, green, hazel — have a subtle, golden color in them.  Adding just a touch of gold eyeshadow on the part of your eyelid above your iris (aka the center of your eyelid) will bring out this subtle golden color, adding a new level of depth to your eyes.  Some of my favorite combinations include (1) a neutral shade on the lid with a taupe in the crease, popped with a touch of gold added just above the iris, and (2) a lilac shade on the lid with a deeper amethyst in the crease, popped with a touch of gold (this last one looks amazing with hazel eyes).  So the next time you’re doing your makeup, take another minute and add a subtle pop of gold to the centers of your eyelids :)

My golden recommendations:

-Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash in “Gold”

-Laura Mercier Lustre Eye Color in “Gold Dust”

-MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow in “Gorgeous Gold”

Vintage Alert! – Boots Original Beauty Formula Collection

boots1

When it comes to skincare, we love choices.  We love the security that comes with knowing that if Product A doesn’t work, there is always Product B or C or D.    However, Boots took the opposite approach with their new Original Beauty Formula Collection ($8-$14), and the result is a truly charming, vintage-inspired range of products.  The new collection is based on formulas found in the Boots archive dating back to the 1800s that experts then gently reworked using traditional ingredients such as lavender, rose and geranium.  Looking at the collection can’t help but evoke images of women arranging their treasured beauty products on their vanity.  The best part?  Each product comes in gorgeous, vintage-style packaging and reusable glass bottles.  Available at target.com.
